Concussion/Post concussion syndrome

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury caused by a coup contracoup injury-anything that makes the brain move rapidly forward/backward inside the skull.

While hitting your head is a common way to sustain a concussion, it is NOT necessary to have hit your head in order to cause a coup contrecoup. Symptoms of concussion can vary widely between patients, but often include

  • headaches
  • fatigue
  • eye pain
  • nausea
  • visual disturbances
  • balance issues
  • difficulty focusing

Up to 90% of people who suffer a concussion will get complete resolution of symptoms within 10-14 days. These patients may not even need PT.

However, any symptoms (even mild) which linger past 2 weeks; are often considered as post-concussive syndrome.  Symptoms of post concussive syndrome can become more involved than what is seen immediately after injury, and often include

  • headache
  • fatigue
  • vision changes
  • balance problems
  • confusion
  • dizziness
  • insomnia
  • difficulty concentrating
  • anxiety or depression
  • memory loss
  • irritability
